The Nigerian government faces scrutiny over the detention conditions of Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan. Responding to concerns over Gambaryanâs health, the Nigerian government, through Minister of Information Mohammed Idris, denied claims of inadequate detention conditions. Idris refuted allegations of mistreatment, asserting that Gambaryan was being treated with âutmost fairnessâ at the Kuje Correctional Center near Abuja.
According to Idris, Gambaryan has access to quality medical care and full consular services from his home government. However, U.S. lawmakers have urged for Gambaryanâs release, alleging that he was not permitted to meet with his legal team without government officials and armed guards present.
The Malaria Incident and Ongoing Controversy
Detained in Nigeria since late February on money laundering charges, Gambaryan collapsed in an Abuja courtroom in May due to malaria. While a judge ordered him to be admitted to a hospital for evaluation, his family claimed that it took prison authorities 11 days to take him for a brief check-up. Recently, Congressman French Hill and Cynthia Houlahan visited the prison, alleging that Gambaryanâs condition has dramatically worsened.
