Bolivia could soon rank among the top five nations in cryptocurrency adoption, according to Bolivian MP Mariela Baldivieso. Her push for pro-crypto policies, coupled with recent regulatory changes, is setting the stage for a crypto transformation in the South American country.
A Path to Economic Relief Through Crypto
In a recent interview with Criptonoticias, Baldivieso highlighted that the use of cryptoassets is providing a lifeline for Bolivia’s struggling economy. With new regulations lifting restrictions on crypto transactions, Bolivians are now trading roughly $45 million worth of crypto monthly, helping to offset the impacts of an ongoing economic crisis.
Bolivieso explained, “We are calming an economic crisis thanks to the use of cryptoassets. It’s a positive thing.” These changes come as a wave of Latin American nations experiment with crypto as a tool for economic stability and growth. Venezuela and Argentina have already seen crypto adoption surge amid economic hardship, and Bolivia may soon join them at the top of the crypto adoption rankings.
Regulatory Reforms and Investor Protections in the Works
Baldivieso has been a fierce advocate for blockchain and cryptocurrency since her election in 2020. Recently, she and other lawmakers have been drafting new bills to safeguard crypto investors and spread awareness about blockchain’s potential. Her vision includes educating the public to prevent common crypto-related scams, which have become a rising concern.
“We have begun working on bills that will protect crypto investors and boost public knowledge about the world of blockchain,” she stated. “Bolivia has a lot of potential. In fact, I think we will soon be at the top of the adoption lists.”
To support these efforts, the government is partnering with local blockchain associations and universities to offer basic courses in blockchain technology. These programs are designed to help Bolivians understand the opportunities and risks of crypto, laying a foundation for informed participation in the digital economy.
An Accelerated Reform Process
Baldivieso emphasized that Bolivia’s rapid adoption of QR code payments is creating fertile ground for a broader embrace of digital currencies. She noted that Bolivia ranks as “the number one Spanish-speaking country” in QR code adoption, a statistic she believes will aid the transition to cryptocurrency.
Since 2020, the regulatory landscape in Bolivia has transformed, now welcoming payment platforms of all kinds. “The law now allows payment platforms of every kind to come to Bolivia and set up shop,” Baldivieso explained. This change marks a stark departure from Bolivia’s prior regulatory stance, which had kept the country behind in crypto development for years.
Crypto-friendly legislation, combined with Bolivia’s increasing QR code adoption, positions the country as a potential hotspot for blockchain adoption. In fact, she’s working with a coalition of pro-crypto lawmakers and local blockchain advocates to introduce new policies designed to accommodate crypto businesses and make transactions simpler and more accessible for Bolivians.
Agricultural Sector May Drive Crypto Adoption
Baldivieso is focusing on engaging Bolivia’s agricultural sector, which she believes could significantly benefit from cryptocurrency as a tool for remittances. Farmers, especially those in rural areas, face high fees for traditional remittance services, making crypto an appealing alternative with its low commission costs.
Working alongside NGOs, Baldivieso is introducing crypto education to indigenous communities, particularly for those involved in farming and exporting goods like soybeans. She believes that crypto can offer these communities a faster and cheaper way to manage international transactions.
“This is especially helpful for farmers who export products like soybeans,” she said. “They could benefit from lower commission fees, keeping more of their hard-earned money.”
The initiative aims to make crypto transactions accessible to farmers, allowing them to bypass intermediaries and send money directly, helping to improve the efficiency and profitability of their operations.
Potential for Crypto Mining and Energy Sector Revival
Another key part of Baldivieso’s crypto vision is the development of a legal framework for crypto mining. She has been in contact with several mining companies, which have shown interest in establishing operations in Bolivia if regulations are implemented to ensure stability.
Crypto mining, she argues, could help bolster Bolivia’s energy sector. With gas production cut in half from a decade ago and oil output at historic lows, a thriving crypto mining industry could provide a new stream of revenue, helping to revitalize the energy sector.
Baldivieso believes that with the right regulatory support, Bolivia could become an attractive hub for crypto mining in Latin America. Her discussions with mining companies suggest that investors are ready to move quickly—provided the country can create a stable and crypto-friendly regulatory environment.
